MAY is NATIONAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION MONTH and Cortez, Colorado is part of the celebration! Established in 1973, this month helps "promote historic places for the purpose of instilling community pride, promoting heritage tourism, and showing the social and economic benefits of historic preservation."

CREA is proud to support the 13th ANNUAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION DAY right here in our city:

DO YOU REMEMBER PENNEY'S AND WOOLWORTH'S ON MAIN STREET? This years Cortez Historic Preservation Day on Saturday, May 13, will celebrate the 1950s and 60s in Cortez. The Penney’s store at 20-30 W Main Street opened in 1953, the Woolworths at 130 W Main Street opened in 1958, and the Montgomery Ward catalog store at 35 S Chestnut Street opened in 1957.

These properties, now the Cortez Area Chamber of Commerce, @kokopellibike and the Montezuma Heritage Museum respectively, will be open during a FREE WALKING TOUR of Main Street to share memories of the post-WW II auto/tourism boom in Cortez!

• ENJOY THE FREE WALKING TOUR of Main St at 10am OR 2pm! All tours will start at the @cortezculturalcenter, 25 N Market. To sign up, visit or call the Center at 970-565-1151, ext. 13; space is limited!

• Long-time residents of Cortez will be there to SHARE THEIR MEMORIES of shopping in these new stores back in the day. And local car enthusiasts will talk about their memories of cruising Main Street and hanging out at the drive-in restaurants, including Burger Boy Drive In. Their 1950s and 60s VINTAGE CARS will also be available in nearby parking lots to visit!

• The new Montezuma Heritage Museum will display some promotional materials for the motels and restaurants that opened in town to accommodate the tourists. The Museum will be open from 10am-4pm, free of charge.
